In this blog, the hosts will share the key takeaways from their conversation, providing a comprehensive understanding of these crucial topics.

Podcast Themes

Integration of Body Awareness in Spiritual Practice

One of the core themes discussed with Abdi was the vital role of body awareness in spiritual practice. In our hyper-individualized culture, many of us have become disconnected from our bodies, often treating them as mere vessels rather than integral parts of our spiritual journey. Abdi emphasized that the body serves as a grounding tool, essential for anchoring spiritual experiences and managing the mind’s tendency to wander. Practices such as focusing on the sensations of the feet and mindful breathing are techniques Abdi advocates for bringing awareness back to the present moment. By doing so, individuals can balance their energy, calm the mind, and foster a deeper spiritual connection.

Abdi explained that the body holds wisdom and memories, and grounding practices like yoga, martial arts, and acupuncture can help individuals access and process deeper emotional and psychological layers. This integration of body awareness is not just about physical health but is a means to holistic healing and spiritual growth. Abdi’s approach is rooted in the belief that the body is a vital part of our spiritual practice. By cultivating a relationship with our physical selves, we can enhance our overall well-being, stay present, and connect more deeply with our inner selves. This practice of grounding is essential for managing the mind’s distractions and ensuring that spiritual growth is authentic and grounded in the realities of our physical existence.

Interplay Between Psychological Healing and Spiritual Growth

Abdi’s insights into the intricate relationship between psychological healing and spiritual growth were enlightening. He stressed that spiritual practices should not be used to bypass psychological issues but rather to integrate them for comprehensive healing. Abdi shared his experiences and training in psychotherapy and Jungian analysis, which he combines with spiritual counseling to offer a holistic approach to healing. He introduced the concept of “spiritual bypass,” where individuals use spirituality to avoid addressing emotional wounds. True spiritual growth, Abdi believes, requires confronting and healing these psychological wounds, which often stem from childhood traumas and other deep-seated issues. By addressing these issues, individuals can prevent the ego from misappropriating spiritual experiences for self-aggrandizement.

Through personal anecdotes from his own Kundalini awakenings, Abdi illustrated how profound spiritual experiences often bring unresolved psychological material to the surface. He emphasized that both psychological and spiritual work are essential and complementary. Therapy helps individuals understand and process their emotional patterns, while spiritual practices provide the tools to transcend these patterns and connect with a higher sense of self. Abdi’s insights underscore the importance of a balanced path that honors both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of human experience. This integrated approach ensures that spiritual growth is grounded and authentic, rather than being an escape from psychological reality. By combining psychological healing with spiritual practices, individuals can achieve a more holistic and sustainable path to well-being.

Impact of Spiritual Practices on Relationships and Emotional Processing

The impact of spiritual practices on relationships and emotional processing is another key topic the hosts explored with Abdi. As individuals undergo spiritual awakenings, profound changes often occur in their relationships. These changes can sometimes lead to separations or divorces when partners grow at different rates or in different directions. Abdi emphasized the importance of authenticity and staying true to one’s spiritual path, even when it disrupts established relationships. Spiritual growth often accelerates emotional processing, allowing individuals to confront and release emotions like heartbreak, rage, and grief more effectively. Abdi advises maintaining a loving and compassionate approach, even in the face of relationship challenges. By choosing love over fear and processing emotions through spiritual work, individuals can navigate the complexities of relationships with greater clarity and peace.

Abdi touched on the concept of differing spiritual frequencies in relationships, where one partner’s growth might challenge the other. While these situations are painful, they ultimately serve the higher purpose of personal and spiritual development. Abdi believes that spiritual practices are not just about individual enlightenment but also about enhancing the quality of interpersonal connections and emotional well-being. The podcast also addressed the importance of letting go of relationships that no longer serve our spiritual growth. Abdi shared that staying in unhappy marriages or relationships out of fear or obligation can be detrimental to both partners and their children. He advocates for choosing authenticity and aligning with one’s true self, even if it means making difficult decisions.

All spiritual masters teach us that love is an activity before it is a condition – and that love is all-encompassing.

It felt like I was coming off a race track and driving in a school zone. He knew, years before I did, that my speed was my way of suppressing my early childhood anxiety, and that only slowing down could heal it.

Why do you need to use all these words like God and spirituality? It is right here Abdi, all around you, all the time

one does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.

Ultimately it keeps grace out of our lives because we are using our will power to manipulate every event and person around us.

His lesson, which I had begun to learn for myself, is that outside circumstances do not define our internal experience if we can surrender into them. Painful or undesirable situations will always arise; true suffering comes from our ego’s desire to resist life as it is.

Note from Pernilla:
I met Abdi in the fall of 2014 and when I arrived in his office the first thing he said was, “It’s time that you stop carrying other people’s anxiety.” In the year that followed, my entrenched codependency patterns reared their ugly heads and I was confronted with a part of myself that I had never even known was there.

A few years later, Abdi said, “When are you going to start writing your book?”I looked at him in surprise. I was not a writer. My expertise was centered around creating crazy good Excel spreadsheets. However, I started writing and collecting notes about life issues and life experiences … and here we are a few years later.

Note from Pernilla:

I met Sally at one of her workshops at City Yoga in LA in 2003. She had the most gentle and loving disposition, and I just wanted to always be around her. I was fortunate to have been part of her two year-long “Transformative journey” courses in 2006 and 2007 and many retreats ever since. She is the true representation of unconditional love and transmits intense shakti from her Guru Swami Muktananda.

Sally is the primary building block and foundation in my spiritual journey. Without her, I would have never found and stuck with meditation – the most transformative experience of my life. Without her, I would have been lost without a clue where to go next. Her wealth of knowledge of yogic philosophy and incredible understanding of the human condition is what makes her a force to be reckoned with.  She understands your depth and makes you feel seen, heard, validated, and deeply loved.
